What is breast augmentation?

Most people assume that breast augmentation is just about making breasts larger. However, Dr. Edmund Kwan is of the opinion that it is more about enhancing the shape of the breasts. Some patients may have reasonably large breasts, but the shape may not be very nice looking. Other patients may simply have no breasts at all or have a flattened shape of breasts. Some others may have tubular breasts, with a very elongated shape. In all such cases, the breast augmentation procedure can help make the breasts larger and improve their shape at the same time.

In Dr. Kwan’s experience, improving the shape is the most important component of the breast augmentation procedure. To quote Dr. Kwan, "During the breast augmentation process, I would like to shape the breast as well, and not just make it bigger. I do not believe that only a bigger breast is better in every case, but making the shape better is a key part of the aesthetics in all cases."

In the breast augmentation procedure, artificial implants are placed underneath the breast tissue or muscle. Over the years, the breast augmentation procedure has grown substantially in terms of popularity. Patients not only get enhanced breasts and an improved personality, but it also helps to improve their self-esteem.

However, the patient must be fully aware of the possible risks, complications and costs involved in such a procedure. A good surgeon will always take care to educate the patient thoroughly about all aspects of the surgery. This helps the patient have realistic expectations and achieve satisfying results from the surgery.

In addition to being an elective procedure for cosmetic purposes, breast augmentation is also helpful for patients with breast cancer who have undergone a major cancer surgery. Such patients may also be able to restore their breasts with artificial implants.
