Facelift surgery to tighten and lift skin
in New York City

With all the cosmetic advances that have been made in the last decade, there are many ways to turn back the clock on your face. But few procedures can achieve the same dramatic results as the surgical facelift, a procedure that has stood the test of time. However, it’s understandable that many patients are hesitant to undergo this procedure due to fears that it may change their appearance or compromise their ethnicity. This is part of what sets Dr. Edmund Kwan apart. Patients in the New York City area can trust Dr. Kwan to take the time to understand the results they truly want while helping you achieve ageless, beautiful results that preserve what makes their face unique, as well as their ethnic integrity.

Facelift basics

Most people can agree that there are some wonderful benefits that come along with getting older, but the wrinkles and sagging skin are not among them. Environmental toxins, genetics, and lifestyle choices can accelerate the aging process in your skin, leaving you feeling less than confident about your appearance when you look in the mirror. While several minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are available to help reduce the signs of aging, they are typically temporary, requiring maintenance treatments every few months, and can have side effects if not performed by a skilled practitioner, such as the appearance of a “frozen” face. That’s where a facelift comes in.

In facelift surgery, Dr. Kwan uses precision and artistry in combination with the least invasive methods possible to rejuvenate and refresh your skin while maintaining your natural appearance. Facelift surgery traditionally focuses on the lower two-thirds of your face and consists of removing extra fat and skin, tightening the facial muscles, and reshaping the skin in the face and neck to revitalize your appearance.

Facial Rejuvenation or Facelift is a procedure that involves tightening of the muscle as well as the skin. Dr. Edmund Kwan, M.D. from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Manhatten, Flushing and NJ. explains more about this procedure in this video.

What is Facelift?
Facial rejuvenation or facelift is a procedure that involves tightening the face. The face with aging, droops and people develop jowls and wrinkle especially in the lower part of the face and the neck.

As the tissues sag typically for people in their 40s 50s and 60’s this creates excess skin and also distorts the jawline and makes patients look older. By rejuvenation we basically tighten all these tissues that sag, and so facelift is what we do.

How long does a facelift last?
These facelifts last between 8-10 years. It is a procedure that involves both tightening of the muscle as well as the skin.

Are there other techniques for facelifts?
There are other types of facelifts that are more invasive that involves going deeper and these are procedures that are high risk and have more complications and patients go through a much longer recuperative period.

How a facelift can benefit you

Facelifts can help erase the signs of aging in many ways, and can be a great option for patients who have:

  • Moderate to severe wrinkles in the face or neck
  • Loose and lax skin in the face or neck, which may be due to weight loss or aging
  • Jowling in the neck area
  • Lost volume in the lower or mid-facial region
  • Excess fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise

Facelifts are highly customizable to your preferences, which Dr. Kwan learns during a thorough evaluation and consultation prior to your treatment. For example, if you have lost youthful volume in certain areas of your face due to aging, Dr. Kwan can incorporate fat grafting or custom-sculpted implants into the procedure to truly transform your appearance.

Good candidates for facelift surgery

Patients often consider facelift surgery when they are tired of using cosmetic injectables or other temporary treatments, or if they have a significant amount of loose or sagging skin that cannot be addressed with less invasive procedures. A facelift addresses many cosmetic issues all at once, making it a comprehensive anti-aging procedure that few other treatment options can match.

To be a good candidate for facelift surgery, patients should be in relatively good health and any chronic or acute medical conditions need to be well-managed. Dr. Kwan will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your skin, as well as review your medical history, health status, and treatment goals, to determine whether a facelift is a right choice for you.

It is also important to note that smoking can negatively impact recovery and healing, so patients should be able to stop smoking for two weeks or more before their procedure, as well as afterwards. Smoking will also dramatically accelerate the aging of your skin after your treatment, diminishing your results, so ideally, you should not plan to resume smoking once you stop.

How the procedure works

Before your surgery, Dr. Kwan will make surgical markings on your face while you are seated comfortably and engaging in conversation with him. This helps him determine the best locations to make the incisions and skin pulling for natural-looking results that flow with your facial movements.

During the procedure, Dr. Kwan will then make small, discreet incisions by the ears and hairline to reduce the visibility of any scarring. He will pull and tighten the tissues in your face and gently remove any extra skin, as well as tighten the muscles and remove extra fat deposits where needed. Other procedures you have decided on, such as fat grafting, cheek reduction, jaw reduction, or forehead contouring, will be performed at this time as well. A facelift typically takes about two hours, but the total time it takes will depend on which specific procedures you are having performed.

A facelift can be truly transformative, and patients often maintain their results for up to seven to ten years after their treatment. However, lifestyle choices such as sun exposure, smoking, and chronic stress all play a role in the longevity of your results.

Possible side effects and complications

After your surgery, you will likely experience some bruising and swelling, but most patients do not experience a great deal of pain, and any discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medications. After about ten days, most patients look and feel like their normal selves again and can resume their normal daily activities. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for a few weeks after your treatment, however.

Patients often wonder about scarring; Dr. Kwan makes incisions in strategic locations so that scars can be hidden and are not detectable by others.

Because a facelift is a surgical procedure, there are risks to the treatment, such as the possibility of infection, excessive bleeding, nerve injury, and hair loss in the area of the incision. Dr. Kwan will cover all of these in detail with you before your surgery and can answer any questions you have about possible complications.
