Breast Augmentation (Augmentation
Mammaplasty)
Breast augmentation or enlargement, has regained its
popularity in recent years. Women who seek augmentation want
their chest to be both aesthetically pleasing in and out of
their clothes. The ideal candidate for breast augmentation
is anyone wishing to have more attractive breasts. The
breast implants used today consist of saline and silicone.
Both implants are safe and the silicone breast implants have
now gained FDA approval.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Patients may have adequate breast size but they have
considerable sagging due to weight loss, pregnancies or
aging. This type of patient may be a good candidate for a
breast lift. During a breast lift, excess skin is removed,
the breast is lifted, and the remaining skin is redraped.
The resulting breast is fuller and firmer. The nipple
position is better and the breast will have a more youthful
appearance. Breast implants can be inserted during a breast
lift for patients who wish to have simultaneous
augmentation.
Breast Reduction (Reduction
Mammaplasty)
Many patients suffer from breasts that are so enlarged that
their physical activity may be compromised. These patients
often have neck, shoulder and chronic back pain. Bra straps
may also leave indentations and grooves in their shoulders.
By reducing the volume and lifting the breasts, patients
will have relief of these symptoms. A breast reduction is
performed similarly to a full breast lift. Breast tissue is
removed and sculpted to give the breast a natural tear drop
shape. It is important to maintain adequate breast volume
during reduction so that it is proportional to the body.
Many patients will also retain nipple sensation following
surgery.
Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer continues to be on the rise in United States
and each year many patients will undergo a mastectomy for
their disease. Following a mastectomy, patients can be left
with a deformed chest wall and an unpleasant scar. This can
have devastating psychological consequences on the patient
over time. For some women, breast reconstruction can be a
rewarding procedure. Breast reconstruction can be performed
at the time of the mastectomy or anytime there after. The
surgery can result in a natural looking breast that closely
resembles the other breast.
Breast reconstruction
can also restore positive feelings of self-image to cancer
patients and be an overall satisfying experience for
patients. |
