How does the preoperative otoplasty appointment work?

The preoperative otoplasty appointment involves a detailed consultation with the patient that is critical to the success of the procedure. The plastic surgeon will conduct a close examination of the patient’s ears to estimate the extent of the problem. He will discuss the treatment options with the patient and explain how the ear will be reshaped to a more normal size.

Otoplasty New York City

Patients can discuss their own needs during the preoperative appointment so that the surgeon knows exactly what size and shape of the ears is preferable. The surgeon will also try to evaluate the general health and medical history of the patient to ensure that he or she is an appropriate candidate for otoplasty.

Once the treatment approach is agreed upon between the patient and the surgeon, the surgical procedure will be discussed in detail. The patient will be informed about the kind of anesthesia or sedation that will be used in the surgery. The advantages of the surgery, its inherent risks and complications and the estimated recovery period after the surgery will also be discussed at the preoperative appointment.

The costs of the surgery, anesthesia and any other related costs will also be discussed. If the patient has any other issues, doubts or concerns, they will be addressed by the surgeon as well. This ensures that the patient experiences minimal anxiety and concern during the procedure.

In many cases, the patients of otoplasty are small children. Therefore, the presence of a parent or guardian during initial consultations may be imperative. The date of surgery may also be discussed with the surgeon, keeping in mind the child’s school days and any other priorities. The surgeon should be assured of the presence of a parent or a designated guardian to take care of the patient following the surgery.
