Attractive faces are generally symmetrical and balanced. So, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Edmund Kwan has developed considerable expertise in facial shaping procedures to restore or support that beautiful balance. Available at our three New York City area offices, these procedures include genioplasty surgery. While our services are top-class, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to reshape your chin and more at the offices of Edmund Kwan, M.D. Everyone deserves to be confident in their appearance, and exceptional plastic surgery need not be cost-prohibitive!
What do you mean by “genioplasty”?
“Genio” is derived from the Latin word for “chin,” while “plasty” refers to forming, molding, or shaping. So, such surgical treatment quite literally involves reshaping or recontouring the lower portion of the face.
How can I benefit from this procedure?
Genioplasty may be appropriate if you are unhappy with how your chin either protrudes or retrudes – it may stick out too much or just the opposite. The chin may be recessed and look overly small compared to other features and the rest of the face. Dr. Kwan will thoroughly evaluate and discuss your concerns to determine if genioplasty is best or if you might benefit from another treatment.
Is there a lot of preparation before treatment?
Preparing for genioplasty is really no more exotic than preparing for other plastic surgeries at our offices. Dr. Kwan may advise that you stop taking certain medications or supplements, or you may be asked to alter the dosage or how you take these drugs. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatories and herbals can increase your risk of bleeding and other surgical complications. So, they should be avoided for this reason. It probably goes without saying, but smoking should also be avoided due to the associated surgical risks as well as how the nicotine in cigarettes, tobacco, and vaping products inhibits healing.

How is genioplasty performed?
The techniques used to get your desired contours are specific to your unique anatomy, needs, and preferences. However, genioplasty is generally performed through well-placed incisions or openings inside the mouth or underneath the chin. The underlying tissues are then accessed, and the bone itself may be moved forward. Or, if your chin sticks out too much, bony tissue may be removed. Here again, the process and specific steps really depend on your anatomical characteristics and goals. The incisions are closed, and due to the nature of the treatment, you will immediately see results – though the full results are only seen once the swelling has gone down.
