You may like everything about your look except the size and appearance of your forehead. Now, you don’t have to hide your forehead behind bangs, fringes, or other “disguises.” You deserve to be confident in your appearance, and our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in New York City, Dr. Edmund Kwan, can help you to “get there” with hairline lowering surgery, also known as forehead reduction or scalp advancement surgery.
There are a lot of names for this procedure, but what does it all mean?
Primarily, what you need to know as an introduction to this procedure is that Dr. Kwan can shorten the space between the hairline and eyebrows. He accomplishes this by repositioning the scalp and moving it forward and down. The result is a shorter distance between the brow region and the hairline and a lower positioning that supports attractive facial proportions.
I’m a good candidate for this procedure if my forehead is large?
Possibly! But, as with all treatments at the offices of Edmund Kwan, M.D., we won’t know for sure what is appropriate for you until after a consultation is scheduled. During this visit, Dr. Kwan will closely examine your specific concerns and discuss them with you at greater length. In addition to a high forehead that could use the lowering or benefit from a smaller appearance, it is essential for Dr. Kwan to confirm that you:
- Have good scalp mobility.
- Are not experiencing considerable thinning at the frontal hairline (as continued hair loss can expose incision lines).
- Take a realistic approach to results and expectations for outcomes from surgery.
- Have a healthy outlook and are generally healthy to minimize anesthetic and surgical risks.
Real Patients, Real Results Before and After Done By Dr. Kwan

What can I expect during surgery?
If this procedure is right for you, it may be performed under local anesthesia with relaxing sedation or general anesthesia. The incision or opening is then made at a spot/position pre-marked by Dr. Kwan. He then moves the scalp forward by a pre-determined amount, dependent on your unique anatomy and needs. After any excess skin on the forehead is removed, the openings or incisions are closed. Generally, a surgical dressing is also applied for the first one to two days to minimize the risk of swelling.
And what can I expect afterward?
At every step in the process, each patient’s experience will be unique and have slight nuances. So, we are speaking in generalizations here. Everybody heals and responds a little differently to procedures. With that in mind, some discomfort, red discoloration, swelling, and bruises at the treatment site are to be expected. You might consider taking about a week off work to allow any noticeable effects to subside. After just one month, hairs will begin to grow through the incision, supporting a natural look. It typically takes around six months for incisions to fade fully, but your hairstyle can often be altered to camouflage any lingering signs of your procedure. We will review any after-care instructions specific to you well in advance of surgery.
