Liposuction is an effective body contouring procedure that can remove unwanted fat to reshape various areas of the body. Liposuction can give improve patients’ proportions and help eliminate stubborn pockets of fat. If you are in the Manhattan area, Dr. Edmund Kwan has years of experience re-sculpting bodies beautifully with liposuction.
Why do patients choose liposuction?
While good nutrition and regular exercise are important to looking and feeling great, it is not always the answer to body shaping. Regardless of physical fitness, many patients still struggle with lingering, areas of fat. In many cases this is due to genetics, which means that no amount of diet or exercise will eliminate that fat. Liposuction allows your plastic surgeon to remove targeted fat pockets to give you the body you’ve been dreaming about.
How liposuction works:
Liposuction can be performed several ways, but the most common is called tumescent liposuction. Prior to the fat removal, an anesthetic solution is injected into the targeted area to reduce bleeding and make the fat easier to suction. The procedure takes about an hour per area treated.
Liposuction vs. tummy tuck
While both liposuction and tummy tuck can improve the shape of the waistline, they are performed for different reasons. Tummy tucks remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction is strictly for the removal of fat and is ideal for patients who have small pockets of excess fat, but are close to their ideal weight. We recommend tummy tucks more often for patients who have had extreme weight loss or who have been pregnant.
Preparing for Liposuction
Patients who smoke will need to stop at least four weeks prior to liposuction. There are also certain medications such as blood thinners that may increase risks. These and other concerns will be discussed during the consultation.
