Jaw Bone Augmentation
to refine and contour your jawline in NYC
The contours of your jawline have an important effect on your entire facial profile and appearance. In men, a broad jawline is typically associated with masculinity, and a prominent, yet refined jaw is a sign of feminine beauty in women. If the jaw or chin area is too small in proportion to the rest of the face, it can lead to a fleshy or “double chin” appearance in the neck and make the nose look larger than it is. Dr. Edmund Kwan, plastic surgeon in the NYC Tri-State area, offers jaw bone augmentation surgery to help provide patients with more balanced facial contours.
What a jaw augmentation accomplishes
Jaw bone augmentation is a versatile treatment that can help men and women achieve an ideal jaw line and overall facial symmetry. It can be a good option for patients who have a jaw line that is
Narrow or “weak”, Too short or long in comparison to the rest of the face, Asymmetrical, and drawn back towards the neck.
Planning your treatment
Dr. Kwan performs an in-depth consultation and evaluation process prior to treatment to help identify the best plan for your unique facial contours, desired end results, and 3-D imaging is also used to determine the amount of augmentation is needed. This treatment can be done either alone or in combination with other facial enhancements such as a neck lift, cheek implants, rhinoplasty, or other treatments as part of a comprehensive strategy to help you achieve stunning results. The specific combination of procedures that Dr. Kwan recommends are tailored to your specific needs: a patient who was born with a recessed jaw, for example, requires a different approach than a patient who is seeking to refine an aging jaw line. The shape, size, and placement of your jaw implants will be custom-designed by Dr. Kwan to match your specific anatomy and goals.
Jaw Bone Augmentation Before and After Done By Dr. Kwan
The jaw bone augmentation procedure
We will give you thorough instructions on how to prepare for your treatment, as well as all of the information you need for a healthy recovery. To perform the surgery, most patients will be placed under intravenous anesthesia so they are completely comfortable. Then, Dr. Kwan makes an incision inside the mouth to eliminate the chance of future scars, and creates a small pocket in which the jaw angle implant is placed. The implant will be anchored to the bone. Then incision will be closed with stitches.
Jaw augmentation can be a great option for people who have a chin or jawline that is:
- Weak
- Recessed
- Asymmetrical
- Imbalanced with the other facial features
- Affected by traumatic injury
- Affected by birth defects
In addition to refining your jawline and bringing balance to your overall facial appearance, a jaw augmentation can help make your neck area look more youthful, tight, and lean, seemingly taking pounds and years off of your appearance.
A variety of implant materials can be used, medical-grade silicone is most commonly used because it has reduced rates of complication and can be more easily removed at a later date if needed. Dr. Kwan will discuss the best implant material for your specific needs based on your personalized consultation and evaluation.
By making the incision to place the jaw implant within your mouth rather than on the outside of your skin, it will prevent anyone from seeing scars that may result from the surgery.
Most patients can return to work after one week and resume most to all of their normal activities one to two weeks after their surgery.
In the immediate period after your jaw augmentation surgery, you will experience mild to moderate pain that can typically be managed with either over-the-counter pain relievers or medications prescribed by Dr. Kwan to keep you comfortable. In addition, you should expect some swelling in the area, which combined with the new implant, will make your skin feel tight for a few weeks. Because Dr. Kwan makes the incision within your mouth to hide any scarring, you may need to limit the types of foods you consume for several days after your treatment, as well as use a mouthwash to help prevent infections.
We will have you come back in to the office on a specific date after your surgery to remove your stitches, which does not typically cause discomfort. Dr. Kwan will also check on your healing and recovery at this time and answer any follow-up questions that you may have.
Your appealing new jaw contours will become more visible as these side effects wear off, with your final results being noticeable within about three to four weeks after your surgery.
After your jaw implant is placed, it will last a lifetime. The implant is anchored to your bone to keep it firmly in place and the medical-grade implant material is designed for longevity.
