Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck can be a great option for patients who have the following issues in their abdominal area:
- Extra skin
- Loose, lax muscles
- Muscles that have separated, called diastasis recti
All these issues can naturally occur due to body changes throughout your life course, such as pregnancy, gaining and losing weight, getting older, and even abdominal surgeries such as appendix removal or hernia repair. The patients who achieve the most dramatic results from a traditional tummy tuck are those who have loose muscle and excess skin throughout the entire abdominal area; however, Dr. Kwan also performs mini tummy tucks, which can be a great option for patients who have looseness primarily beneath their belly button.
Because a tummy tuck is an invasive surgical procedure, certain medical conditions are contraindicated for the surgery, and it is important to be in generally good health before undergoing the procedure so that your recovery is as smooth and rapid as possible. Dr. Kwan will discuss your medical history and health with you prior to the procedure to ensure that you are a good candidate.

What is Tummy-Tuck surgery or Abdominoplasty? – Explained by Dr. Edmund Kwan
What is tummy tuck surgery?
Tummy tuck surgery involves tightening the skin, tightening the muscles and removing fat. It is a three-part surgery.
Who is an ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery?
Ideal for patients who post-pregnancy have loose skin with stretch marks as this is the only way to remove stretch marks.
Also, for patients who have lost weight or someone who simply want a flat stomach. Many patients will have loosened abdominal skin and muscle.
How is the tummy tuck surgery performed?
The surgery involves removing all the excess skin through an incision in the lower part of the belly. The scar will be well hidden in the panty line.
Also, liposuction is done in combination with a tummy tuck for any areas that have lipodystrophy or excess fat. The belly button also is modified and becomes much more attractive following the surgery.
What is the duration of the surgery and the healing process?
The surgery usually takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The healing process will cause some discomfort in the beginning.
However, after 2-3 days, most patients are back on their feet, and many patients go back to work within 2-3 weeks.
3D imaging allows you to see your results before the procedure
One of the most important parts of the tummy tuck procedure happens before you ever set foot in the operating room – the planning process. Dr. Kwan conducts a thorough consultation with every patient before moving forward with the procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Kwan will discuss what you like and don’t like about your stomach area, as well as what your ideal results would be. One of the truly revolutionary technologies that Dr. Kwan is equipped with is 3D imaging technology that enables Dr. Kwan to take images of your body and then create a computerized rendition of what your results will look like. With this tool to guide your discussion and fine-tune how you’d like your results to appear, Dr. Kwan can strategically plan your surgery to help you achieve those results and you can enter the procedure with confidence that you will love your new body shape.
How a tummy tuck works
Before your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia. This ensures that you are completely asleep and pain-free during the surgery.
If you are undergoing a traditional (full) tummy tuck, Dr. Kwan will then make an incision that extends from one hip to another. The location of the incision allows you to hide it under swimwear and apparel. He will then tighten the muscles in the abdomen and stitch them together if they have separated due to diastasis recti, and then use liposuction to remove any excess fat in the area. He will then strategically remove any excess skin and re-shape the belly button for top-class, natural-looking results. The final step is to close the incisions with sutures or other adhesives.
For patients who are undergoing a mini tummy tuck to flatten and tighten the area beneath their belly button only, Dr. Kwan will first create a small incision above the pubic mound. Then, he will tighten the loose muscles to help flatten the appearance of a “pouch” beneath the belly button. He will also perform liposuction to remove excess fat in this area and remove a small amount of skin as needed to tighten the stomach.
Healing and recovery
After your surgery, Dr. Kwan will dress and bandage the incision area to help protect it and aid the healing process. You may also be provided with compression material to minimize the swelling and to help support your abdominal area. In some cases, thin tubes may be used to help drain extra fluid or blood that may accumulate. Dr. Kwan’s team will give you thorough instructions on how to properly care for your incision to ensure proper healing and recovery, as well as warning signs of infection or other issues that would require you need to come into the office to be evaluated. You will likely experience some pain and discomfort in your abdominal area after the surgery. Dr. Kwan will discuss how to manage the pain, as well as when to come in for a follow-up appointment so that he can evaluate your healing progress and results.
Because tummy tuck surgery is considered invasive and involves surgical incisions, it does carry risks of side effects and complications. For example, general anesthesia has some risk involved, and the incision can fail to heal properly or become infected. Dr. Kwan will discuss all the risks with you in advance so that you are fully informed before undergoing the procedure.
The initial swelling caused by the procedure, as well as the likelihood that you will be unable to stand fully upright with good posture during the initial recovery period, can hide your results for a week or two after the surgery. However, once you can stand erect and the swelling has subsided, you will be able to see your beautiful new contours and flatter, firmer stomach.

Doctor Edmund Kwan is the most masterful plastic surgeon I’ve ever met. He did my full tummy tuck. I was obese, I lost a 100 pounds. My stomach was distorted. I had hernias. One side was high, one side was low. My lower abdomen was really flabby and it hung a lot. It didn’t hang over my pubis but it hung a lot. He fixed that. My scarring I had my surgery two years ago. You didn’t even see a scar. You would not believe that I had a tummy tuck. He did a phenomenal job.
This patient overcame obesity; she lost 100 pounds! This big victory left behind a “distorted” stomach and hernias. Thanks to our “masterful” plastic surgeon’s scar-free tummy tuck, she beat the bulge without unwanted consequences.
