Mommy makeovers are a customized combination of procedures designed to reverse the changes to the body caused by pregnancy and nursing. While every mother should be proud of her body after childbirth, there are physical changes that can be difficult to deal with. Mommy makeovers can correct some of those changes.
At our NYC office, Dr. Edmund Kwan performs many mommy makeovers and one of the most common procedures he uses is liposuction. In the following article, we will discuss what liposuction is and how it has become an integral component of many mommy makeovers.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses a small tube, called a cannula, to remove fat from targeted areas of the body. Liposuction can help recontour the body for a slimmer appearance.
Liposuction has been around for decades, but the procedure has come a long way with advancements in technology. New techniques allowed doctors to remove the unwanted fat with improved accuracy and less pain, resulting in a safer, less invasive procedure.
The liposuction procedure
There are many different techniques for liposuction, however the tumescent technique has emerged as the number one method.
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthetic. The doctor will make a few small incisions and inject the anesthetic to make the fat easier to remove. The cannula will suction out the fat.
Lasers or ultrasound technology may be used to liquefy the fat before it’s removed, making the removal process easier.
After liposuction, it is normal to experience bruising and swelling. Compression garments can help with these symptoms during healing. Results from liposuction will appear gradually over the course of several weeks to months.
